The , in conjunction with BTO and Natural England, are running national surveys of the three key lowland heathland species in 2025 â Nightjar, Woodlark and Dartford Warbler. Four Research Assistants are being recruited, on six-month contracts (from early February to the end of July) to undertake fieldwork for these surveys at various sites (primarily in England).
These posts require experience of conducting fieldwork on lowland heathland, moorland and in conifer plantations, by 1km-square. The post holders should have a good knowledge of the ecology of Nightjars, Woodlarks and Dartford Warblers and should be able to ensure the smooth running of the surveys by dealing diplomatically with all interested parties.
Fieldwork will involve long and unsociable hours in the field and will be physically demanding over the contract period. Extensive travel to different sites may also be required. Applicants must be able to regularly travel to, from and within remote locations not served by public transport.

The Trials Officer will assist in the delivery of an annual programme of field trials from the planning and execution phases through to the reporting of trial results. Developing personal skills and professional experience of agricultural research. Full training will be given as required.
Duties include trials preparation â seed weighing, assisting with administration, checking protocols, field application sheet creation and quality control, fertiliser weighing, and maintenance of equipment. Field operations â backpack and tractor-mounted sprayer use, chemical handling, fertiliser application by hand and machine, combine harvesting (operating and sampling) and drilling (driving and seed handling). Field assessments â disease and crop physiology. Quantitative analysis â plant populations and weed counts. Record keeping â equipment. Data analysis â data entry and statistical analysis.
Machinery skills are desirable but not essential. Full training will be given in all roles, with the emphasis on developing the individualâs skillset to match their role.
The successful candidate will be a âhands onâ individual, with an enthusiasm and passion for Scottish agriculture. Prior fields trials experience and an appropriate agricultural or land-based qualification to diploma level is desirable but not essential. Good communication and organisation skills, hands-on experience working with arable farms, high attention to detail, a flexible work ethic and strong team working skills and the ability to work autonomously are also desired.

During the through grading season, from September to April, the post holder will be responsible for overseeing the operation of the new Tong potato grader, potato grading and movement information, daily cold store temperature monitoring, weekly updates to cold store maps and ungraded stock checks, leading fortnightly QC checks on ungraded potatoes in store and organisation of the box yard.
Out with the grading season, from May to August, the post holder will be responsible for irrigation, including laying of pipes and setting up and monitoring of reels, and assisting with potato test digs and grader servicing.

Harriet and Ben Lowe have been growing a farm business for the last six years with a team of seven people currently working full time on the farm. As some team members approach retirement, it is key to find the right new people to join the business.
HB Farms is a pig and arable farm with some sheep and bed and breakfast cattle. 440 ha are cropped including environmental schemes and there are 450 sows. Around 330 piglets are born on the farm every week with 300 pigs being finished each week. The company are looking to engage a number of Agricultural Liaison Officer (ALO) trainees as demand within the renewable energy sector increases. This is an excellent opportunity to become an important player in the development of exciting new projects across the country.
There is an increased importance placed on renewable energy. As a result of this, more windfarms are being developed, as well as solar power farms and energy storage systems. The ALO could work on any of these projects.
The ALO will assist the project land agent by interacting not only with the client, but with contractors and landowners as well. They are in a unique position in this respect to help determine positive outcomes from complex interactions. They will attend meetings and must understand construction processes as well as farming regimes. They report, when necessary, matters which impact on project success.
Candidates need to be honest and hardworking; an agricultural background is an advantage. Ideally candidates should have a driving licence and be familiar with Microsoft Word and Excel software.
Training will be essential and rigorous for candidates, to reach the necessary high standard for a role which is both complex and fulfilling. FGP will offer learning not only within the office environment but also in the field. They will be supported on their journey, becoming a vital part of a team dedicated to giving their best.
Once training is completed the ALO will be able to write a daily report, complete office tasks efficiently, e-mail and understand plans, drawings and maps. They will become confident on site and wear all the necessary PPE supplied. The ALO may have to work on their own and will follow lone working guidelines.

Moira and Adrian Rees are looking for an enthusiastic agriculturally minded person to join them for 6-12+ months on their dairy farm in NW Tasmania. During the previous calving season, some new and recently graduated students joined them from various UK colleges and following on from this very positive experience they would like to provide a unique opportunity for someone else to come to work and learn with them.
Before emigrating to Australia two years ago Adrian farmed in Pembrokeshire, Wales for many years on his own 300 cow farm. Moira currently works as a full time Vet in mixed practice and worked in Carmarthenshire for several years, so they have a good understanding of both systems.
Moira and Adrian are currently 50:50 share farming, milking 750 cows on the north west coast of Tasmania in an extensive spring calving system, NZ style. Calving starts in August with a ten-week calving block. The position would start in July, but an earlier start can be accommodated. This role would include all aspects of dairy farming; milking, bale feeding, calf rearing, disbudding and carry out their own breeding programs and AI. It will also provide an opportunity to gain more experience in grass management.Â

âForestry experience and qualifications are advantageous but not a pre-requisite. Relevant training can be provided across a range of topics for the right candidate. These positions may suit someone with an environmental, geography, agricultural or rural surveying background who wishes to enter the forestry sector. People with professional acumen are sought, who are commercially aware and have a sound understanding of the rural sector. Excellent communication and organisation skills are required, together with the ability to identify, analyse and solve problems. Experience of working with contractors, project management and health & safety are all highly desirable.
âThe role offers an excellent balance of practical outdoors work with office-based duties.
Applicants must hold a full, valid driving licence which is essential for the role. Professional membership of the Institute of Chartered Foresters or progressing towards attaining chartered status or another similar professional qualification is preferred but not essential. New recruits would be encouraged and supported to achieve these additional qualifications where they are appropriate to the role.
